An insightful story into the world of stand up comedy. I loved the character Brenda monk and I could really relate to her. The nervousness and tension was perfectly built up and described and it was a book I struggled to put down. The only reason why it wasn't a five star book was the ending. I thought it lacked closure and could have been more surprising and funny. The pace seemed to lull in the final chapter. Apart from this loved this book.

I was prepared to dislike this book - the blurb did not fill me with enthusiasm for this book club read. I have however enjoyed it It has a pact. easy to read style. i like Brenda and her quirkiness. Some of the content is sexually a bit near the knuckle but not enough to spoil the story being told. The book seems less to do with the funniness of Brenda monk and more to do with the finding or Brenda by herself. She seems to have lived off and for others and is now developing an honest sense of self. There are some obstacles along the way but she grows in my estimation as she acknowledges and deals with them
