Knowledgable Creatures by Christopher Rowe: 4 stars
Generally speaking, I'm more than happy to walk away when the narrator is a dog, but this one is different. In fantasy detective story, Christopher Rowe introduces us to a magical universe in which some creatures have been turned "knowledgeable", given sentience. It starts out with a murder, takes you through a conspiracy, and leaves you wanting more set in this universe.

One/Zero by Kathleen Ann Goonan: 4.5 stars
I found this one to be a beautiful and intriguing story. I love the idea of powerful AI in the hands of children in desperate need and the subplot of a woman renewing her purpose. However, there were some gaps where I felt a bit confused as to how things happened. Despite the moments of confusion, I was immersed for most of the story.

Blue Morphos in the Garden by Lis Mitchell: 4.5 stars
A emotionally rich story about how we face death.

Painless by Rich Larson: 2.5 stars
While written well enough, something felt a bit incomplete about this. I was unclear on too many details that left me wondering how things had gotten here. It feels more like a segment from the middle of a book than a complete story in and of itself. Furthermore, it added nothing to the military SF genre that hasn't been explored before.

Mama Bruise by Jonathan Carroll: 3 stars
While this short story is well-executed, it's just not my thing. It has two central concepts,
communicating animals and reincarnation
, that seldom ever excite me as a reader. No idea why. It's purely a personal preference.

Although I must say that I love the collection beginning and ending with dog stories. :)
