As I started reading this book my first thought was “Wow, Katy is really crazy and obsessed with Dirty Dancing, it's nuts, she’s nuts!” and then I realised that's what people must think of me, because I had to admit it to myself: that is me.

The book is a true love letter to Dirty Dancing, it's funny, it's heartwarming, it’s gripping and it's spot on. If you love Dirty Dancing you will get it and you will smile, laugh and nod throughout. If you don't love Dirty Dancing you will maybe finally understand those of us who inexplicably do.

The author says “If you fall in love early, you fall in love hard and I think I’m a little bit in love with Dirty Dancing” I too fell in love early: the first time I remember seeing Dirty Dancing I was 5. I only remember the final dance scene, I probably only caught it towards the end (which is really for the best because I don't recommend it to a 5 year old!). Later, at the age of 8 I was at an HMV store and asked my parents to buy me my first non kids music CD: the single to Dirty Dancing’s "(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life". And 1 year later a friend from school mentioned Dirty Dancing and I just couldn't believe it. I said "I have the cd!" and she was ecstatic. She said she and her dad loved the song but they had never been able to record it so it had been a long time since they had last listened to it. I taped it for her and she came back the next day saying they had danced to it on loop for hours. Many many many years later when an ex who had cheated on me called me and said "I tried to watch Dirty Dancing and I couldn't because it reminded me of you, I miss you“ rather than feeling vindicated as any normal person would I just sat there and thought "Oh no you don't!!! You don't get to ruin Dirty Dancing for me because it's my movie, it's not our movie, it's my movie!"

I realise I’m making this review a bit too personal, but at its core this is what the book is all about, and that is what the book shows us: we (the fans) all have our personal Dirty Dancing stories, and it was a pleasure to read Katy Brand’s story.

To the author, if you ever read this, from one Dirty Dancing lover to another: well done Katy, and above all thank you. When people ask me “Why do you love Dirty Dancing?” I always say “I don't know" but Katy, thanks to you, now I do know. Seeing it through the eyes of another fan - and being able to connect with the genuine love with which you talk (or rather, write) about the movie - I finally know: I love it because the truth is, it's bloody amazing.

P.S. Just like you I bought that watermelon cushion, just like you I'm still not sure why. But I don't regret it one bit.

Fans of the movie will adore this book. It is humorous and insightful in the way it examines the movie and it’s impact and meaning - both on a personal level for the author and for the wider society. It made me go straight to watch the film again this morning and gave me a new outlook on it. I have seen it several times before and enjoyed watching it again with all the information from the book. The writing style was engaging and easy to read and added an extra layer to the film.

Who knew that Dirty Dancing was such a classic! Brand's enthusiasm is infectious - next time the film is on telly, I shall watch it through fresh eyes.

Aw, I really enjoyed this book.

Katy hits the age of 40 and celebrates by watching Dirty Dancing for the millionth time.
This brought back nostalgia of her younger years when she watched the film for the first time and over and over from the age of 11.

Katy explains how the film influenced her choices in life and the way she looked at things whilst growing up!

Dirty Dancing is a coming of age story with a strong heroine with lots of passionate dancing and sex. There are so many strong threads running through the tale such as a woman's choice in abortion, the higher and lower classes and the limited opportunities they have to work/survive with a strong sense of community and looking out for one another.

I remember watching this film with my mum when I was 16, and she fast forwarded the dirty bits!🤣 I have watched it all the way through since then, and I can totally relate to what Katy says about the film 🎥
It's such an iconic movie and one that all young girls should watch.

That famous scene 'I carried a Watermelon 🍉!' And 'The Lift' will never be forgotten!

There are some strong female messages at the end of the book that make you feel empowered to be a woman.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me!🤓
