The stories in this book are enormously important and I'm in awe of the strength of the survivors telling their stories, and of the tenacity of the author in listening and recounting their experiences. For that reason this book is enormously important and well worth reading. However I felt that it was let down by the structure of the book and how rushed it felt in places, with little overarching coherence and what felt like random segues in to different timeframes, and some areas where the editing could have caught repetition of facts and phrases within a few pages.

Ações relatadas neste livro estão entre (se não mesmo são) as mais nojentas que se possa imaginar serem cometidas por seres humanos, gravidade amplificada por se terem passado inúmeras vezes ao longo do tempo e espaço (geográfico). Apesar de o livro se focar maioritariamente em mulheres/meninas, a autora também menciona que em muitos casos homens/meninos são vítimas de abusos - embora estes casos sejam ainda mais "tabu", e por isso ainda mais difícil de perceber a frequência e a dimensão do problema. Homens que violam senhoras de idade, mulheres, raparigas, meninas e bebés, não deixando a salvo nenhuma idade ou geração, homens que violam em grupo ou individualmente, homens que violam com o seu orgão genital ou que usam objetos como paus ou armas, homens que compram e violam e vendem raparigas como se fossem um objeto, homens que roubam até à última parte da alma a humanidade das mulheres. Mulheres que são sujeitas a violações físicas e psicológicas que não conseguiríamos imaginar nos nossos piores cenários, mulheres que sofrem homens e anos sem fim, para muitas vezes depois ainda serem marginalizadas, discriminadas ou mesmo ostracizadas pelas suas comunidades e famílias, e que quase nunca chegam a receber justiça alguma por tudo o que passaram. 
 Quando ultrapassamos o choque, indignação, raiva, sofrimento por compaixão, e surpresa pela força de espírito e caráter que as sobreviventes exibem face às agressoes que sofreram, temos uma réstia de espaço mental para desviarmos o olhar para o homem que comete todas estas atrocidades - como é que é possível que tantos homens "normais" tenham sido capazes de cometer barbaridades tão desumanas? Qual é o tipo de ambiente que se gera numa guerra, num batalhão de soldados, no terreno de combate, para que seja possível tantos homens serem cúmplices de tamanhas atrocidades?
