Gets more interesting about halfway through. The main character’s persona was undefined and unexplained for quite a while, and that made her pretty boring. Looking forward to the next books.

Martha Wells is a master of writing action, and I enjoyed both plot and characterization. The magical system isn't extensively fleshed out, but the invented cultures are more of a focus

A fun fantasy with a nice multiple-worlds culture clash setup and some satisfying dungeon crawling.  I haven't read any of the other Ile-Rien books, dunno if that makes a difference.  I particularly liked the use of language barriers early on in the book.
