"As much as she'd been hoping otherwise, Rebeca Linke's thirtieth birthday began with exactly what she had expected: nothing." This is the opening sentence of The naked woman written by the Uruguayan writer Armonia Somers and translated by Kit Maude.

What follows is Rebecca's surreal and powerful quest for feminine liberation and freedom. She heads to a remote cottage, strips naked, cuts off her own head (leaving behind her "conventional consciousness"), repositions her head, and ventures naked into the woods. As she wildly meanders through the Uruguayan countryside she activates a "full-blooded" desire and violent rage in the townspeople.

“The night offered an unlimited opportunity to fulfill her desires. She was much freer than those sorry things in the sky— she was the night itself.”

This book, written in the 50's, is a radical, feminist gem that depicts female sexuality and desires as well as misogyny and violence.
