Whoa. This book was something else. Ethereal main character, seemed like the embodiment of lust and freedom, as she swept through the village like a ghost, and transformed the men into lusty boors. Felt hazy and dream-like throughout, and surprisingly violent.

In setting up my computer to share powerpoint slides, the google search page I used to look this book up in GoodReads was accidentally shown to my students waiting to talk about organic chemistry. They didn't say anything [did they understand this was a foundational feminist text from South America immediately], but score one more for the internet in the era of me using too much technology due to pandemic &c.
Anyhow, I admit I have not actually read many foundational feminist texts, and this being a work of fiction/myth threw me somewhat after the front matter describes it as overtly political. I probably didn't get as much out of it as I could have. Nevertheless I was interested in the way a small town/village was described; aspects of small town misogyny seemed familiar and of the era but other parts were not and I was interested in that blend.

Somers’s story of a woman leaving behind societal expectations creates a dark and violent tale. The elements of magical realism and nightmarish sarcasm make The Naked Woman a truly remarkable novella.
