Look, there's no getting around it- the premise is creepy. Lincoln is reading Beth's emails, some very personal emails, without her knowledge. And yet, that was not my issue with the book .

Lincoln is the prime POV in the book and he's a nervous, self-conscious, lost, nerdy guy. He's not inherently creepy, and Beth and Jennifer's emails are genuinely hilarious and interesting, that you kinda get over him invading their privacy.

My main issue with this book, and why I'm giving it 2 stars instead of a usual, passable 3, is the endgame. Lincoln and Beth get together at the very last minute, which wouldn't necessarily bother me, except there was NO build-up as there usually is with epistolary/slow burn romances.
Spoiler There was build-up from Lincoln's side. It's undestandable that he's all in. But Beth...she only knows him as the cute guy at work. Yes she's attracted to him, but she doesn't know him. At all. And she immediately gets into a relationship with him, for seemingly no reason. After just breaking up with her 9-year-live-in boyfriend. And we don't even get to see them as a couple, except for the epilogue
.

For me, the book would have worked much better if Lincoln and Beth met around the 2/3 mark, so she could get a chance to know him too.

I love Rainbow Rowell’s writing and haven’t read any of her books in years and to read this was like coming home.

This is definitely the nicest I've ever felt after finishing a Rainbow Rowell book. Eleanor & Park is the only book of hers I've given 5 stars to, but it still left me feeling melancholy and a little empty; that was the intent, though, and I enjoyed it. Fangirl was an overall weird experience for me, especially since I identified with a lot of the things that happened and I was incredibly frustrated due to that fact, so I didn't close that book feeling super great. Carry On was likely the closest I came to closing one of Rainbow's books without feeling completely sad or despondent, but the overall tone at the end was still kind of strange and sad, so I had a hard time assigning the words "happy ending" to it.

So here we are, with her debut novel, and, man that was some cute shit. I don't know what it is, but with this, Tell Me Three Things, Alex Approximately, and Listen to Your Heart, I keep falling into these secret admirer stories lately. Obviously this one was a little different because he wasn't actually contacting the girl he admired, but it still reminded me quite a lot of the previously mentioned books due to the fact that Lincoln keeps wondering if Beth likes him back, Beth secretly follows Lincoln around a couple of times, and all that jazz.

This was a really cute, refreshing read and it's impressive to me that this was her first book and I liked it better than almost all her other books; the only one I haven't read is Landline, which might just be next on the docket because of how pleasantly surprised I was by this. For once, people's claims that Rainbow Rowell's books are unique and refreshing finally rang true. I'm very interested to see what she dishes out in Landline.

I really loved it! Rainbow writes such good characters! This lighthearted novel which could be like a one-eye, one-tear jerker is probably my favorite Rainbow Rowell book now.
