Gonna agree with others that the plot is incredibly muddled and I don’t see an average 10-12 year old understanding or connecting to it. The historical references are too obscure and the protagonist spends so much time in her imagination that it’s really hard to follow.

It’s so hard to follow. The girl is so steeped in sci fi and I just can’t connect to her.

What a cute book! I really enjoyed reading about Ebony and her love for space that she shared with her grandfather. She had a very vivid imagination and it was fun to read about what she saw versus the reality of what was going on. Overall reading this and just imaging myself being in New York City during the summertime as a kid just felt like freedom! I will say that the ending felt abrupt and when an issue arose in the story it felt unresolved. I experienced shock while I read it but the characters seemed detached which was unexpected to me. Aside from that I enjoyed the story and I couldn’t help myself from reading about a nerdy black girl!

The audiobook is read by Zoboi, and I highly recommend experiencing the story this way! As a MG debut, I thought she did a wonderful job of reminding me what it's like to be in the mind of a 5th grade kiddo. At times, I wondered if the main character was supposed to be on the Autism spectrum, but Zoboi stayed vague about that. Did anyone else wonder about this?

Summer, 1984 and Ebony-Grace has been sent from Alabama to stay with her father in Harlem, where she struggles to fit in, preferring her fantasy Space world instead. Though the author effectively evokes the spirit of the times, I thought the plot was muddled and the resolution was problematic. See my full review here.

I do recommend this in audiobook form. Ibi Zoboi narrates.
