It's been a long time since we've seen anything from Paul Pope, as he's worked on Battling Boy for years. This little volume (issue #101 of the imaginary long-running "Invincible Haggard West" series), serves as a prelude, as the old superhero guard is ushered off stage to prepare for Battling Boy.

It's amazing what Pope's frenetic layouts and pacing can bring to a story that is, by its very design, run of the mill. Haggard West is the typical superhero, but he looks like he just came out of a particularly fashion-conscious homeless shelter, with his wooly sweater, elbow patches, and scarf. The plot's a bit thin, leaning on his amazing panel to panel storytelling, but even so, Pope invests the promised death with a nice note of poignancy.

A nice appetizer, but I'm ready for the full meal.
