I took so long to read and review this collection that it's now out of print. Too bad for other readers, as it is a very good collection. But Generous has a few other collections of short stories you could, and definitely SHOULD, check out. There are a few stories here that are included in later collection, DUSK, but there are a couple that I read for the first rime here, including "The Things" which I thought was a wonderful mixture of humour and terrifying horror, and "Ingrained" which was terrific, especially the way Generous introduced the menacing element slowly before ramping up the pulsating violence until it reached an unexpectedly sweet conclusion. I always have a wonderful time reading Generous's fiction. He is surely one of the finest authors of original and entertaining horror short fiction working today.

One of the things I like so far in my growing relationship with [a:Eddie Generous|16154427|Eddie Generous|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]’s books is how he wears his influences on his sleeve without being obnoxious about it. He knows how to give a nod to something without ripping off the original, and nowhere is that more apparent than in my favorite tale in Something in the Water, “Proper Farmer”. What makes this one a delight is how it drips with the influence of [a:Stephen King|3389|Stephen King|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1362814142p2/3389.jpg] to the point where I’d be shocked if it wasn’t an intentional homage to one of my favorites of King’s growing up. However, it doesn’t feel like any sort of rewrite. The story manages to be both original and a nod to something else, and that takes talent. And yes, I’m intentionally being vague because you should let the pieces fall into place on their own and have the same “I see what you did there!” moment I did without me ruining it for you.

Having never read anything by the author before, I didn't know what to expect. Given my love for short story collections, I couldn't resist diving into Something in the Water. With a cover that is beautiful, yet simplistic, it gleefully promised a surreal experience. Knowing that I have a soft spot for monsters, I settled in for a good read. What I wasn't expecting was the range of stories and the emotions accompanying them. This collection of 13 tales by Eddie Generous is both emotional and eerie.
