1930s noir and a vampire with a heart who interacts with the mob.
P. N. Elrod is amazing in her depiction of the time period. You can see, smell, feel, and hear it as you read.

The description for this book is incredibly misleading. He isn't trying to find his mother, he's trying to find his vampiric sire and former lover. Yikes, but saying it's his 'mother' changes the tone quite a lot!

This time the lead brings him to a murder and funeral scene, where an elderly lady who had no right to have this many enemies – has many murder suspects indeed. Among which the ones most capable of such a heinous act are completely innocent. Such as her vampire lover.
My Opinion: Story very oddly both remains fully attached the the previous one, following solid and steady timeline, something I’m really missing in stories way too often, but at the same time Jack’s just… suddenly there. And as a reader I neither understand nor know where, who, why, how come is happening. Tale isn’t much captivating either, but, if I’m being honest, it’s not bad either. Wasn’t boring, wasn’t dull. So it seems like I’ll continue my journey alongside Jack.

Before Buffy, and even Dracula, Jack Fleming was my first introduction to the bloody and erotic world of vampires, as well as hard-boiled detectives and noir literature. I had originally read [b:Lifeblood|609101|Lifeblood (Vampire Files, #2)|P.N. Elrod|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1361738061s/609101.jpg|2997530] (Book #2) back in high school, and was immediately hooked,... but was unable to read anything further at the time. This read-through is an attempt to go back and pick up the story from start to finish, and make sense of the series of events that I unknowingly nose-dived into.

...Although I do have this nagging sense that it isn't quite over just yet.
But even if it is, the rules and mythos for Jack and his vamp-lore are pretty well established at this point, with plenty more to uncover, so it'll be interesting to see where the characters go from here.

, and it finally wraps up the Maureen arc that was launched in the first book. I'm honestly surprised that it was resolved so quickly,... I was expecting it to come together as a big finale of some sort. I had no opinion on the outcome initially, but I do like it, upon review. It's a completely unspectacular and non-explosive finish, which makes it believable in its own way....Although I do have this nagging sense that it isn't quite over just yet.
But even if it is, the rules and mythos for Jack and his vamp-lore are pretty well established at this point, with plenty more to uncover, so it'll be interesting to see where the characters go from here

Another awesome addition to the series. The mystery what light but it was cool to meet another vampire. We are left on a slight cliff hanger that I guess is open to interpretation. On to the next one!

Jack Fleming is trying to find out what happened to his girlfriend. She left him five years ago, and as soon as he gave up looking for her, Jack was found by vampire hunters and by Maureen's sister. In his interactions with Maureen's sister, he learns more about why Maureen left and where she fled to. Charles Escott, as an inquisitive private investigator, has used the the information they found out about Maureen to trace the place that Maureen fled to, and now the time has come to pay this place a visit.
When they get to the house that Maureen's phone calls were traced to, they discover another vampire, Johnathan Barrett. Although Barrett is evasive with them, Jack and Charles find themselves learning more and more about the strange circumstances of Maureen's disappearance. All is not well in Barrett's household either as he is surrounded by two human women with unclear (and perhaps suspicious) motivations. Will they find out what happened to Maureen? Will all be well in Barrett's life? Fleming finds himself getting more and more involved in Barrett's affairs and household as he searches for answers about Maureen.
This book was an interesting and fitting conclusion to the search for Maureen. We finally meet another vampire in this book, and interestingly enough, this vampire is the lead vampire in a different series by Elrod (It must have been 20 years since I read that series, and I'm now thinking about re-reading it.). The events of the book are interesting, and I really enjoyed reading this one.
My favorite part of this book is when Escott steals Fleming away from a funeral home. It's a perfectly comic picture, especially as they are working so hard not to get caught, but Escott ends up getting jailed for a while anyway!
The ending is a little dark, and I felt sorrow that it ended on what was an essentially unhappy (but slightly hopeful) note. I look forward to reading the other books in the Vampire File series. In fact, when I finished this book, I splurged and ordered the whole rest of the series and the Johnathan Barrett series, so I'l be reading Elrod for a while!

These books just keep getting better and better. Loved this one and still can't get over the ending! Dying to start book 4 now, but my thoughts are now what Jack's gonna do now... :(
