I came across this book that I had read in the 7th grade for summer reading and decided to reread it because the ending had stuck with me all this time.
It was fantastic!
I’m not sure how much of my love for this book is rooted in nostalgia, but it was a great book regardless. The ending had my jaw on the floor, and I’ve read it before.

I made the mistake of looking at the Library of Congress categorizations, so the one big reveal of the book I guessed 20 pages in. Despite this, there was still a significant amount of intrigue to keep me invested. Even so I thought the story was about 50 pages too long, especially in the middle. But, the characters were rich, and I enjoyed reading it

My apologies to this book, but I really couldn't get into it. The premise was interesting enough, but the way it was written was just... not something I had the patience for.

The ending was certainly surprising, and I did appreciate that little twist, but in the end, it was not enough to redeem the book overall.

Wow what a book! I read this with goodreads group read with friends. I've read matts short story in the Christmas book and really enjoyed his writing style. Wow The ending I did not see coming. I'm so confused.

Matt de la Pena shows his versatility in this book, as it is so different from the others. Kidd's voice is disturbed and troubled, and the reader struggles with him. I loved it! I can't decide if I like this one or Ball Don't Lie better, but they are both great reads.

Awesome. I support any book that deals with adolescent mental health issues.

Holy plot twist! I did not see that ending coming at all. When I first started this book I was so confused (which is why I'm taking 1/2 star away) but after 30 or so pages I started to catch on and was fully immersed. Can't believe that I haven't heard more about this book or this author. Will definitely be checking out more of his work!

The plot was a little slow for me at times and even if I was spoiled I think I still would've predicted the plot-twist at the end. However, the fact that it's been a week and my heart is still experiencing the aftermath of this beautifuly tragic, daunting story, I feel it deserves a five star rating.

I didn’t love this one. It was slow and confusing (which I get is the point because Kidd obviously is going through some stuff, but I can see it being a hard sell). I just feel like I’ve read better books about characters dealing with mental illness and abuse and the ending was a little unnecessary. I saw it coming a mile away and fell flat. There can be typical twist endings done in fresh ways and maybe this one felt that way 10 years ago, but now it’s just stale.
