Haven by Rebekah Weatherspoon is the first book in the "Beards & Bondage" trilogy. Haven is about Shep, a grumpy nature photographer who lives out in the woods in Northern California and Claudia, a fashionista from the city. Claudia takes a trip out the Northern California wilderness for a week long get away, but the trip ends in mayhem and Claudia is tasked with trying to survive the night. With no where else to run, Claudia ends up at Shep's door and she's desperate for help. Shep saves Claudia but now both of them are forever changed. To help with the healing process, Shep and Claudia begin a week long sexual relationship, one that includes BDSM session after session. Claudia learns how to be the perfect submissive, and Shep dominates her wonderfully.
This started off really strong with a thriller element and even though
I'm unsure of how to rate the spicy scenes, they were good but I didn't love them. I appreciated that they used a condom in every scene, because the two had just met. The scenes didn't move me in a way that I wanted them to. Keep in mind that all the scenes are BDSM related in some way. I'm giving it three chilies 🌶️🌶️🌶️ out of five chilies
Overall this erotica was okay, I wish there was a better balance between the romance and spicy scenes. I'm giving this 3.5 out of 5 stars.

But what do I know? Lol.
Also why was she and Miles targeted? What happened there?? I had almost forgotten that this all happened. We should have gotten more information on all of it leading to the two main characters meeting.
I'm hoping I get to read the rest of the books in this series soon.

[edit (2023): it’s 5 stars (4.75 if we’re getting hella technical) for me this go around. I’m not sure if it’s because I read it more slowly this time or with age and wisdom comes a deeper respect for certain things but I think I loved this book more the second time around. I will say I forgot how wild and traumatizing the first third of this book is with the event that brings the two main characters together but I loved watching Claudia and Shep’s love story unfold. RW wrote two very layered and complex characters trying to find themselves after tragedy and allow themselves to be seen and loved despite their mess in a way that was beautiful and real. There were quite a few moments where I was like damn, to be intimately seen and cared for and supported and loved like this is the dream for real. I think my critiques from my first read really had more to do with wishing we got to see more of their life together after the final chapter and maybe a peek at Shep as a stay at home husband/dad. But all in all I really enjoyed it. Off to re read Sanctuary!

This book starts off very fast paced to get you hooked and doesn’t let up.
I love how Shep is with Claudia in all ways: how he comforts her when she’s grieving, how he helps her when she has a panic attack, and how he gives her what she needs sexually while still being respectful and giving her aftercare.
Cannot wait to continue on with the series!!!
