Another really fun and heartfelt mystery with characters that I love. Friendship is such a big factor in this story and I love how much Hayden cares about his friends that he is willing to jump into danger to try and prove them innocent.  There are lot of moving parts and interesting characters in this book that made it so interesting to read. I loved the description of the different performance acts and people in the show. I was completely baffled as to what really happened and loved the dramatic reveal and ending.  Not only drama and danger, but there are lots of laughs along the way.

What I also really love in this book is the emphasis on how someone's gender identity or sexuality is of course important, but only one small aspect and there is so much more to someone and they shouldn't be only thought of by that one factor. There is also a lot of introspection via Hayden's blog posts about how important it is to accept change and also love yourself before looking for love.

Note: I listened to the audiobook and it is fantastic! highly recommend!

Cirque du Slay by Rob Osler is a rollicking mystery that will captivate readers looking for a madcap adventure filled with high-flying excitement. Set in the glamorous world of an upscale circus arts show, the novel follows the quirky LGBTQ+ amateur sleuths Hayden McCall and his best friend Hollister as they dive headfirst into a high-profile murder investigation.

The story kicks off when Hayden and Hollister find themselves embroiled in a murder mystery at a fundraiser for Bakers Without Borders. The plot thickens as the enigmatic celebrity performer, Kennedy Osaka, is found dead in her hotel suite, with their frenemy Sarah Lee discovered at the scene. Determined to clear Sarah Lee's name, Hayden and Hollister embark on a thrilling journey to unmask the real killer among a colorful cast of suspects.

Osler's writing shines in this fast-paced and well-plotted mystery, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they unravel the intricate web of secrets surrounding the eccentric characters of Mysterium. The author skillfully weaves together humor, suspense, and heartwarming moments, creating a delightful reading experience.

The book's setting, reminiscent of a glittering circus with a dark underbelly, adds depth and intrigue to the narrative, immersing readers in a world of magic, acrobatics, and unexpected twists. The camaraderie between Hayden and Hollister is a highlight, with their witty banter and unwavering friendship bringing warmth and authenticity to the story.

I read the first book in this series (Devil’s Chew Toy) when it came out and it was GREAT! So I had high hopes for book #2. I was not disappointed! The story was quick paced and engaging.  The characters drew me and the story’s evolution kept me interested.  Hayden, the main character, is easy to fall in love with, as he is a middle school teacher and those people are saints!!! He struggles with balancing his personal and work lives in this divisive political climate. I appreciated that sense of realism brought to the character. The story had twists and turns and it was fun to keep guessing who the killer was and what motivated them. I loved the supporting characters in this novel. Everyone was uniquely themselves and that was refreshingly awesome. There was diversity among the characters, and different perspectives and world views were examined. The door was left open to a follow up, so keep your fingers crossed!

The follow-up to “Devil’s Chew Toy,” I was NOT left disappointed in Hayden’s newest zany mystery. Could there have been a bit more drama, twists, and turns? Sure, but considering how so often the second book in a series is such a flop, I’d consider this a win for Osler.

Narrator, Pete Cross, was great as usual. No complaints.

Overall, I was pleased with this book and would even consider listening to it again in the future after re-reading “Devil’s Chew Toy.”

Would recommend to those who enjoy queer reads, cute mysteries, and a side of humour.

(I received this ALC via NetGalley in return for an honest review. Thank you.)

Loved this follow up to The Devil’s Chew Toy! I didn’t expect a sequel, but now I’m hoping there are more! Pete Cross is the exact right narrator for Hayden. Fun, funny, great characters - both the returning cast and the new folks - and smart writing. So enjoyable.
