this was the second b.e.e. book i have read, and i can already recognise his style, which i do like but also think is not really all that approachable, and if i wasn’t somebody who reads regularly and a lot, i would be completely turned off by it. it’s all a bit removed, though these two books by him that i’ve read so far were a series, if you can call them that, so i reckon i am in no place to judge until i’ve read more.

as said in my review of less than zero, this book is about awful people doing awful things. towards the end everything gets a bit convoluted, and it’s difficult to figure out what is real and what’s only in clay’s head, but that’s part of the fun isn’t it?

clay transformed from an asshole teenager to a monster of a man, and the fact that he made it out of this largely unharmed is honestly insulting. realistic, that rich men can get away with essentially everything? yeah. infuriating? also yeah.

Although it was a bit disturbing, I though it was really interesting and easy to read.

I found this to be a much stronger story than it's predecessor Less than Zero. I felt the writing was more gripping and I really appreciated all the references to real locales in LA
