If you are not a biologist, or even yet a Taxonomist, and want to reflect deeply on one's own sadness in the story of the author and David Starr Jordan, then this may be helpful for you. As a depressed biologist who's been long disillusioned with the myth of a Sole Genius Scientist and has already had many of the discussions within this book, I will rate it as passing. I found this book lacking in detail on David Starr Jordans life that I expected it to have- furter discussion of the problems with the Holotype model of taxonomy, the sheer brutality of scientific discovery during the time period. This book touches on those, but never gets as deep as it could.

I will be honest, I bought this book 100% because the title intrigued me. The book turned out to be incredibly engaging and interesting. I had little idea where it was headed, but I was along for the ride.

I’m also just straight up rattled. I did not think it would deliver on the title, but here I am rethinking my entire categorized worldview…which I suppose is the point.

Beautiful book!

There are so many content warnings, I lost count. Suicide attempts, infidelity, drinking to excess, racism, depression, nihilism, murder, eugenics, forced sterilization, etc.

The author writes well, but the book really centers on nihilism and human destructiveness in the name of desperately searching for order and comfort in this world. 

I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone sensitive.

This book was really good! I had kind of weird expectations going in that made me wary of it, but by the time I got about halfway through I couldn't put it down. It goes a lot of places and has so many really important ideas. I'd definitely recommend it.

Life’s library 2021

I do enjoy a good exploration of metaphors in science. It did seem a bit meandering in how the author reached her conclusion, but it it wasn’t too expansive. I’m not sure how I feel about her portrayal of David star Jordan over the course of the book. On the one hand, I think waiting to reveal his support of eugenics and his strangeness is what lent structure to the book and honestly we are talking about a white man with power at the end of the 19th century. Statistically speaking, he was probably going to have at least one highly problematic world view. She also did do a pretty good job of being chronological with his life.
