A back list gem. Not a lot of books out there that reflect the lives of children with incarcerated parents.

Topic: Picturebook Poetry

This is a beautiful story about the struggles of living in poverty and living in a household with only one parent. I think a lot of kids could actually relate to this story, especially in today's society. I loved that although they knew they didn't have much, Amber and Essie still had each other to turn to and took care of each other when times were rough. I especially loved the way the verses were written. I would use this book in an upper elementary to middle school poetry unit. I think students at this age would be able to understand or even relate to the themes in this book and they could have a deep discussion or write a poem about something hard they've gone through in their lives.

I cry every time I read this book. Sisterly love at its most pure.
