This is a collection of previously unpublished writings from Didion's notebook. It's mostly focused on a trip she took through the South, but also has some writings on the "West." Because it's basically unfinished, it lacks much purpose, direction, or point. She's also weirdly unable to glean any deeper meaning from the South in all her writing about it.
However!!! There are occasional phrases, observations, and paragraphs that are really good and stand out. She's still an incredibly talented writer, and brings her wit and observational skills to bear here.
So it's still a good read. Just..... not quite as much of a complete thing as her other published works.
