"There are no drinks to soften the harshness of it. Ice is begrudged. I remember in one such place asking for iced coffee. The waitress asked me how to make it. 'Same way as iced tea,' I said. She looked at me without expression. 'In a cup?' she asked."

there were so many beautiful words, but these were my favorite.

My first foray into Didion’s work. I’ve spent a lot of time in the South, and Didion was able to see so clearly what so many have difficulty seeing today - the American caste system at work (even if she doesn’t name it as that - found myself referring and drawing connections to Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste).

Do keep in mind this is from her in public has notebooks. Reading it with the perspective of this being her running thoughts helps, as it seems to be very different than her other works.

making my way through the minor didion works (because they’re the ones available as audiobooks on the national library board app)

a perfect description of crossing the causeway into New Orleans. odd to read someone else’s description of somewhere so dear (tuscaloosa). quite enjoyed the notes on the west - hawaii mentions make me a little homesick
