I cried about every 5 pages of this book. I cried because of the joy and sorrow that the characters experienced. I cried at the pain, emotional and physical that they endured, and I cried at the compassion for others that was present in Ruth and all of her family members. A fabulous read, just make sure you have tissues.

Loved the first book and really loved this one too. Was great to revisit the story of Rachel and Ruth through a different lens. Some parts were quite repetitive of the first book but overall still really enjoyed.

This is a fine sequel to Moloka'i, Alan Brennert's story of Rachel - a young girl raised in Hawaii's leper colony away from all she knew and loved. Rachel and her husband Kenji were forced to give up their baby Ruth at birth due to concerns about leprosy's contagion. Here is Ruth's story of young childhood in an orphanage, eventual adoption by a loving Japanese-American family, relocation to an internment camp in WWII, raising a loving family of her own and meeting her birth mother. Detailed, evocative descriptions of the internment camps and life in Hawaii grace the story.
