a pretty quick and light read. the premise was quite interesting and executed well in my opinion.

Mickey as a narrator gets a little grating at times (think know-it-all with a mouth). i did enjoy the world-building aspects of the novel, which thankfully were quite generously layered through the chapters and plot-moving points.

the ending felt a little too neat as well, but got the point of the book across I suppose.

3.7 - I read this after finishing the Dune series because I didn't want to leave the world of science fiction and a novel about somebody who continues to come back to life after dying felt right in line with Dune.

This book is being adapted into a movie with Robert Pattinson playing our main character(s) Mickey. I'm super excited to see this adapted into the big screen because 1) I wonder how some of the story telling will work and 2) the creepers are gonna be sick as fuck.
I really enjoyed the cast of characters and how they interacted with one another. One of my favorite parts of this book was the history of other expeditions to colonize planets that have failed, and few that succeeded.
I honestly really didn't care for Nasha too much, but she was still enjoyable to read. I was honestly expecting this book to have some serious action in it, but it didn't. I found the rather diplomatic ending to be nice though.
I'm also interested to read the sequel to this, and see what's going to happen now that summer has arrived and life is appearing. Really enjoyable and interesting read!

This quick romp through a hostile planet kept me thoroughly entertained. The story moved at a brisk pace, making it the perfect way to spend a few hours on a cruise ship balcony. There's something so magical about diving into a sci-fi adventure while surrounded by the vastness of the ocean.

One of the standout aspects of the book for me was the balance between science and storytelling. Ashton did a great job of weaving in technical details without overwhelming me, so the plot remained engaging and accessible. The humor sprinkled throughout added a light touch, making the dire situations more palatable and keeping the tone upbeat.

The concept of Expendables was particularly fascinating. I loved the idea of a clone who can be resurrected after each death, and I really enjoyed getting to learn about the previous "Mickeys". It added an intriguing layer to the story, making me ponder the ethical and personal implications of this kind of technology. While the secondary characters were pretty one-dimensional, the interesting premise and the dynamics of Mickey's multiple lives made up for it.

I particularly appreciated that this book didn't try to be more than what it was: a solid sci-fi adventure with a unique concept. I know it's being made into a movie starring Robert Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo, and I have no doubt it'll be an entertaining blockbuster.

Things are just picking up after 60-70% pages in... And I don't say they're interesting even.
