Disgusting, but extremely informative and interesting how people like the Rockefeller’s were so involved with public health. I’ve been washing hands raw since starting the book. Can’t wait to scare my third graders into being more sanitary with the data from the book

The title, cover image, and accolades this book received compelled me to read it- I knew nothing about hookworm before reading this nonfiction book in my HS library. I listened to this as an audiobook mostly, and went back through the book images after listening. Wow. It’s gross, fascinating, horrifying, and eye opening all at once! So informative! At first I had no idea why in the world this was a YA book, but now I totally get it. Poop. Bugs. Scary disease. For me, the most interesting part was the historical/social aspect of the hookworm epidemic- I had no idea it was considered a “Southerner’s disease” and that Northern doctors were considered elitist in trying to talk to Southerners about it. I also thought it was much more of a racially charged epidemic, when it socio-economics were definitely more to blame. Excellent research and very compelling.

Well, this was disgusting. But it was also very interesting. It's written in a way that's very easy to read and understand, and it's broken up with pictures. It's a gross and informative read.
