Ridley Jones is a freelance journalist living in an East Village apartment; she’s between assignments so has a free day and what better way to start than breakfast with her ex-boyfriend. On the way to meet him she happens to witness a situation with a distracted mother and a runaway toddler and saves the child from a potentially lethal traffic mishap. A Post photographer happens to capture her heroic act and she’s a minor celebrity for the next few days. But the publicity draws attention, and a mysterious package delivered to her door includes information that proves her entire life is a lie. Before long she finds herself at the center of a large conspiracy and doesn’t know whom to trust.

This is a fast-paced thriller with an intelligent, resourceful, courageous heroine who thinks – and acts – for herself. Yes, there is a romantic interest, but Ridley doesn’t just rely on Jake to save her. She’s strong-willed and independent, and takes matters into her own hands. Some plot points seemed to get a little overboard, but on the whole this was an entertaining read. I’d definitely read another book by Unger.

I was no big fan of the heroine, or the romance, or the endless descriptions. And I honestly didn't want to read this book after the first 10 pages. But it just hooked me on, I couldn't put it down because I wanted to know what would happen next and how the whole mystery would unravel. The plot was really fast paced, and, all in all, to my utter astonishment, I ended up really liking this book. A lot.

Too much blablabla, very repetitive. I found the protagonist somewhat unlikable.

This book was pretty decent. I have to say that Ridley annoyed me at times. I just felt she was a little naive and with all her philosophical ramblings throughout the book, she could have connected some dots a lot sooner. The connection between her and Jake were good and I liked the suspense between them. There are definitely controversial topics introduced here: adoption, abandonment, neglect, abuse. And the insight into how each character reacts to their history and how they became who they are because of it was quite enlightening. How everyone has choices, and how it is only up to you how you decide to let that affect you in a positive or negative way. I found it intriguing how Ridley and her brother were compared: growing up in the same household, with the same values, but how each of them turned out differently. I think it would shape someone differently whether you are loved too much or not enough, shown too much attention, shown to be the favorite. Why is it certain people decide to turn towards drugs despite their good upbringing and loving home? It does all come down to that word again: choice. However, it also begs the question: does someone's personality develop from nurture or nature? Is it in our DNA to behave a certain way when reacting to things, or is it up to us, do we have the freedom to chose how we deal with good or bad things that happen. I like Ridley's idea of how life IS fair. When things are going good, bad things WILL appear. When bad things turn up in one's life, good things will come around again. And just good lessons to be learned all around. I feel wholeheartedly that your past, good or bad, does make you the person you become in adulthood. And life is always giving you those lessons to wisely pass on to others. Such is life, Ms. Unger....such is life. :)

Not my cup of tea. Interesting enough story...when you finally get there. Also, in my opinion, Ridley Jones is a little too weak a character. She comes through in the end, but not my liking for a protagonist. If you like this character I'm sorry, but not a favorite of mine.
