Oh, this was lovely. Tender, while sad…
Doubtlessly my sort of book.

A beautiful and muted book about the political unrest in communist Poland in the 1970s. The underlying love story is both heartwarming and heart breaking, as both characters battle between their senses of duty between getting by and doing the right thing.
Whilst the book covers heavy and serious topics, it is told quietly in a very delicate prose. I found myself holding onto hope regardless of the fact that we know the ending before its even begun.

this book meant so much more to me than I expected it to. the questions of complying with a system vs running away and feelings of helplessness hit close to home, and I saw myself in both Ludwik and Janusz. The author’s writing was beyond captivating and beautifully descriptive and it was just a perfect read. 🩵
