Mrs. Frisby, a widowed mouse with four small children, must move her family to their summer quarters immediately, or face almost certain death. But her youngest son, Timothy, lies ill with pneumonia and must not be moved. Fortunately, she encounters the rats of NIMH, an extraordinary breed of highly intelligent creatures, who come up with a brilliant solution to her dilemma.

Such a great read - almost as good as when I read it as a kid! You can visualize the surroundings so easily with the descriptions provided, and the story provides such a heartwarming perspective re: the lives of... field mice and rats. I can't say this book makes me any less grossed/creeped out of rats or field mice, but I have to give O'Brien props for at least trying to paint a picture of a world where these creatures are... well, endearing if you will.

Wow, I'm so used to the idea any book written before the 80s start slowly and then you gradually see yourself having a hard time putting it down. I was sucked it from the start. I was amazed that I cared about a mother mouse and her quest to treat and protect her ill child. Her bravery and tenacity was fabulous. The characters all had this sort of mythical quality. I love how the mystery of the Rats really build up and their secret was well worth it. When I finally become a teacher, this one will def be in my library. I'm bummed that I never took the time to read this book when I was in school. I really missed out. Highly recommended!

While I don't really like the idea of smart vermin, this is a good children's novel about education, intelligence, and helping your neighbors.
