Okay, I hated animal stories as a kid and I still don't love them. This story was rather dull until it got to the rats and their military-esque plans. That was cute. But I could have done without.
The movie is more exciting. The book doesn’t allow for any supernatural activities, and stays away from themes such as betrayal and murder, but that makes for a more kid-friendly story that sounds pretty real-life believable. Entertaining and has some good moralistic messages about humanity and community.
Cute book. I really think that Mrs. Frisby and her children should have gone to Thorn Valley with the rats. It would have made their lives easier even though the rats and them are completely different.
This was excellent. I've never rooted for rats to live before. All the kids (5-9) loved it.

Definitely one of the better Newberry winners I read to date. I remembered zero of this from when I read it in elementary school. I would have liked a more complete ending with what happened to the rats but otherwise I definitely kept turning pages and would let my kid read this someday.
You know when people describe a book as, "I couldn't put it down." Well, I literally could not put this down! I had no intention of finishing Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH in one day, but I did, and I don't regret it at all! This book was so engrossing, there was never a dull moment! I loved the characters and how everything unfolds. As it is a children's book, I didn't expect it to be so thought provoking, but there is an underlying theme of humans relationship with animals that brings up some interesting points of view without ever being too preachy. Obviously I loved this book, I highly recommend reading it if you haven't already no matter what age you are!
Good book varied differently from the movie as most books do but it was definitely good I love books with animals and it’s been my favorite story for a very long time I was obsessed with the movie growing up so it was good to read the book.
As we pondered classic children's book to read for the PTA book club this year, this title was brought up. I was excited to read it because the title was new to me. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book and the story of the Rats of NIMH. One expects animals to talk in books but not for an explanation of why they read and are so intelligent. The book started a little bit slow to me but quickly picked up as Nicodemus told his story. I loved the parts about the rats!
