I wanted to like this book. Indeed, I was inspired by the first couple of chapters but then my interest quickly waned. At times, for a great swath of the book, I found Manning's writing style to be obtuse and his subject inaccessible. Then at other times, like the chapter on Healing, I found to be wonderful. The book felt like it was written by two different people because the styles seemed so different from section to section. I couldn't endure, slogging through to the end of the book. I just couldn't. Perhaps my heart wasn't ready for The Message.

This book bothered me, humbled me, made me angry and led me to weep. The words are simple and yet, the reality of them wash away any works-related residue from hearts and hands that are willing to receive them. I’ll be reading and re-reading this one for a long time.

There is no greater truth than the reality that is God’s love. You have to experience it to know it. That said, Manning explains it as well as I have heard, encouraging the reader that this love can be experienced, even when one is at their worst, ugliest state.

This is the greatest spiritual book I have ever read and you should read it.

This was a shock to the system; in a good, gospely kind of way. I was enthralled, encouraged, and intrigued, especially by the section on healing ministry. I look forward to dipping into more of Brennan's canon.
