I was afraid this one wouldn't stack up to it's legendary status in my life. But I was pleasantly surprised. This story reads so smoothly, except for Golding's interruptions. I found myself increasingly irritated with his aside comments, like he was an annoying family member over the holidays. The meta aspects were something the movie pulled off better, I have to admit.

I've loved the movie "The Princess Bride" ever since I was little, but the book has been on my shelf for a while. I suppose I was almost scared to read it as I had such high hopes considering the influence the movie had on my childhood. I can say it certainly lived up to my expectations for it. The fast paced, action, romance, and even humour-filled pages made for an enjoyable and nostalgically comforting read. Although I was at first a little confused by the narration choice, the satirical 'abridgement' was soon not lost on me.
The couple we were supposed to be rooting for was more insufferable in text than I had expected, their conversations and Buttercup's inner monologs often leaving me cringing. However, the entertaining plot points and the storylines of and friendship between Inigo and Fezzik kept me invested. This is a cleverly written book and it has all the ingredients to make for a perfect classic story.

the story itself: 5 stars, no question. I adore the story and I love that the film followed it so closely (the dialogue is practically verbatim with a few exceptions. I loved actually hearing the characters). I liked reading more about inigo (my favorite character!) and fezzik’s backgrounds, but I wish there were similar backstories for buttercup and westley.

I like fourth-wall breaks and humor in books but what I can’t stand is arrogance. I understand the whole joke and everything but goldman comes off extremely arrogant (whether or not it’s a joke, it’s so annoying. it’s not a trait I enjoy even comedically) and it was so distracting. I was literally rolling my eyes every time.

aside from that I really liked the book… but I prefer the movie 🫣 the movie is just perfect and improved upon the text - I know there’s obvious bias there, since it’s been my favorite movie since childhood, but I really think not having as many interruptions so that the author can stroke his dick makes it objectively better.

The amount of gay subtext in this book is truly remarkable.

On an unrelated note, Fezzick and Inigo are lovers.

This would've been better without all of Goldman's stupid interruptions.
Obviously this is a fictional story and S. Morgenstern did not exist.
I had a very hard time enjoying this book when Goldman kept interrupting himself to add some useless fact or tell a story about his childhood. I skipped the first 42 pages cause he just rambles on. I just wanted the story of Buttercup and Westley. I don't care if you think he was a genius for how he writes this, I found it insufferable. I would've rated it two stars but I did like the story (minus Goldman being annoying).

Bottom line: THE MOVIE IS BETTER!
