The book was written rather well, but sometimes it felt like it was trying too hard to be deep. There were some pretty weird relationships within this story that I really cannot get behind. The twist was pretty predictable. That being said, it was a pretty fast paced book which made it easier to read.

Objectively this book is a really solid read that's perfect for October. It's a bit spooky, and is a perfect blend of magical realism, ghosts, and unreliable narrators. It’s very much about what we choose to see/not see. But realistically, it's not my type of book. I bought it several years ago, and I probably wouldn’t buy something like it today. I just don’t read much magical realism, I don't have anything against the book.

It’s about a family that believes in a sort of curse in which terrible things happen to them every year during the month of October. I love the concept and the daily exploration of what the accident season looked like was really fun. There’s lots of accidents like broken bones, bruises, and also severe tragedies such as the death of their father and uncle, bridges collapsing, almost drowning, etc.

What I loved the most is the premise. I wanted so badly to know why this family has such tragic Octobers. What I loved the least, was the execution. It didn't quite grip me the way I wanted it to. It doesn't have much of a steady plot and then the reveal at the end didn't satisfy me fully.

It’s super atmospheric and carries a very dark and magical mood throughout. The setting is very vivid and it paired well with the characters learning more about the past accident seasons and realizing that not everything is so cut and clear. There's more blurry lines than they think between an 'accident' or things that are just brushed under the rug as accidents because it's October. Even though I'm not much for spooky stories, I found this oddly entrancing.

I honestly don't even know what to rate this. The "love story" went exactly the way I thought it was going to and I HATE those kinds of love stories. Someone should have warned me 😅 I did like the idea of the secrets and all of them finally coming out in the end. The connections to each other and things happening. But those were some MESSED UP relationships in this book. Wow. I feel bad giving it a lower rating but I just can't justify a higher one personally... it's like a 2.5. It's not a bad book, it just really wasn't for me personally. But if you are okay with this kind of "love story" it's a good ghostly and strange read!!
