The 3rd instalment of the 'Matthias' timeline (for lack of a better word), Pearls of Lutra was the first one I read that used boats and travel from Mossflower to another place, which I found exciting as a kid. I don't particularly remember a lot of what was going on in the plot except for:

Pearls being the coveted item; lizards; otter archer; Martin 2.0;
Spoiler an abbeybeast (I want to say the abbot/abbess?) dies befriending/protecting an enemy - or kills the enemy by sacrificing themselves
.

Still it was one of the ones I enjoyed.

All Redwall books seem to follow the same formula with new sets of characters filling the roles deserted by their predecessors. Throw in your usual batch of prophecy, riddles, battles, villains, and dozens of pages describing food. Still, they're good fun, if ultimately very predictable. Even though Pearls of Lutra didn't do anything new, it was still a very enjoyable read.

Like all good Redwall books, the Pearls of Lutra is full of feasting and sword fights, but I think I enjoyed the riddles in this story the best. The multiple storylines occasionally got confusing but they all converge in the end.

I dont know know why but as a kid, something about this series just worked for me. I couldn't get enough of them. I devoured the Redwall books ravenously. It's weird to look back and think about books you used to love and why, but this series was amazing for me when I was a kid.
