It's not that I didn't enjoy it, but I feel it was too long. One of my biggest issues in The Monastery and The Abbot is the footnotes. All of a sudden there is a three-page footnote written in a totally different style that completely takes you out of the story. By the time the footnote is over, you have forgotten what you were reading about in the first place. The information in the footnotes are interesting and gives you some history but I don't feel they are necessary. I read this as an ebook and the footnotes are part of the story. If they had been normal, with a number at the word linking to the footnote at the end of the book I feel I would've enjoyed it more as I could've read them at my convenience.

Overall the book was interesting and had a lot of history included, but it was too long, too repetitive, and therefore a bit boring.
