I did enjoy the change that we saw the villains perspective. We get to see his rationale and the darkness behind how he performs on the outside. However the book could be long-winded, and at times feel like you're trudging through.

I think this deep dive into Snow’s methodology makes his death at the end of Mockingjay even more poetic.

For a man who is so obsessed with being the symbol of control, to be torn apart by a mob of the people he viewed as subhuman chaos, is so satisfying

It took me forever to want to read this, but now that I did I'm sad I didn't start it when it was released! Loved it

First things first: this was not a bad novel, it just wasn't as engaging as the original Hunger Games series was. This novel also wasn't the story that I thought I would be getting by the description. I thought it was going to be more of Snow's ascent to power as President of the Capital, but instead, it was an "origin story" of sorts about some of the defining moments in his life that started to turn Snow into the ruthless leader he was in the later novels/movies.

I felt like the story was too word-heavy at times and strayed too far into the fringes instead of focusing on the main story, but in the end, it seems to have added to the overall story.

I also feel like this story is not finished yet. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger and would love a second prequel novel to explain the gap in time from the ending of this story and how Snow came to rule over Panem.
