I do love a good memoir and this may be one of the best. He recounts the importance the neighborhood bar and all the regulars had on his life as he grew up without a father. It reads like a novel and is full of the most colorful cast of characters you could want.
I thought this was a great memoir -- books, baseball, bars . . .
The author does a nice job of developing characters and giving his evolving perception of them.

I don't usually read memoirs, but a friend recommended, this, and I'm glad she did. I thoroughly enjoyed it. They say it takes a village to raise a child - and what a village raised this one! Moehringer is an incredibly talented storyteller, and his story was well worth telling. I hope that the movie does justice to it.
A compelling memoir, both funny and poignant. The book is broken up into three sections...the first deals with Moehringer's childhood, living with his single mother in Arizona and spending summers with his extended family in New York. The second, his college years at Yale. The last section, deals with the his early twenties, as he struggles to figure out his dreams and how to reach them. Moehringer's biggest influence is a neighborhood bar, where he grows attached to a large group of colorful regulars and really learns about life and finds a home. The book has many themes, but the biggest one seems to be about self discovery.
After a slow start (partly because the first two c/d's were in terrible shape and skipped around so much that all I ended up hearing was men, unintelligible, men, unintelligible, men) I did end up enjoying this memoir about growing up in a fairly dysfunctional family, the author's quest to find suitable male role models, and his fascination with the local bar. The narration by Adam Grupper was professionally done and I was able to check out the paper version so I could fill in the blanks.

A good story. A bicentennial sofa. A little deliberate, but I'm still going.

Rich girls, broken hearts, alcoholism, SNOOZE.
My Mom's hairdresser didn't even like it.

Audiobook on Libby. It was good, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it in a show or movie format. It couldn’t capture my attention.
I really enjoyed this book. I would give it 3.5 stars. Something terribly tragic about the author that captivated me though I can't quite put my finger on why. A good and interesting read overall.
