A simply ingenious concept with fantastic execution, and a top 10 time I’ve felt seen in a story.

4.5 stars. Such an incredible concept, brought to life in a creative medium with simple but beautiful efficiency. It captures such a perfect moment in time, and made me cry even in so few words, but it's definitely one of those stories that I can't help but wish were just a bit longer. I want to read this all over again, and I think I might do just that.

The issue with a story like this is any criticism of it can be misinterpreted by a certain set to be critical of them and their choices. So let me say this first: I don’t care if you’re a boy, a girl, a trans, or something else entirely. You do you. But I read SFF and I comment on SFF as stories. This is hardly a story, but a therapy session. It’s possibly a very good therapy session, and if couching therapy as a story helps some people, more power to it. But I disliked the format (really, published on Twitter as a series of screenshots? — experimental AF, but I hope it’s no trend) and it’s basically a couple of talking heads (although their characters come across clearly and distinctly) in what is essentially just a dialogue.

I’m probably more fascinated by the medium than the actual tale (which is still impressive). And I come to this from the Hugo list, after reading the blog post and footnotes that make up Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather…crazy times!

3.5 stars.

This was a really interesting format for a short story: text messages between alternate universes.

A bittersweet story about dysphoria and trying to find your way through that by contacting your other selves in parallel universes. Really cool idea.

Wow, that was really good. I couldn’t stop from the first line. Unknown Number is speculative queer fiction that deals with being honest with yourself and brave enough to be who you truly are. It’s reflective I’m the way poetry often is.
