I've played a bit of the Witcher games before, but this was my first proper foray into the world of the Witcher. I quite enjoyed it, though I wonder if I would have been more confused about the world and such if I hadn't played the game before. This was a collection of short stories about Geralt's various adventures, and I read somewhere that reading these really help with getting a background for the actual full-length novels (like about Ciri becoming a Witcher and that kind of thing). I also heard that the show used a few of these stories, and I recognized the first (and only) episode that I watched, so that was nice. I always like when shows do a good job adapting the source material and from what I could tell, it was a fairly faithful adaptation.

The stories themselves were of various qualities. Individually, I would have rated them between 2 and 5 stars; there were a few I was super into, a few that were okay, and a couple where I was just like :/ about the whole thing. I really like Geralt, but I just want to find out more about Ciri because I love her from the game lol. Also Dandelion is annoying af. :P

I'm going to try and read the next set of short stories soon, once I get it from the library, but I'm also excited to read the actual full first novel later on.

(2025 edit: I never actually read any of the Witcher books lol.)

You know a video game is good when it makes you want to go back and read the original material it's based off of. That being said, this book did not disappoint. I loved being introduced to Geralt and other main characters the way Andrezj Sapkowski intended. I've read all of the Witcher books, the ones translated at least, and this one is my favorite. The action is so badass and the romance is heart warming. The origin story of Geralt and Yennifer actually gave me so much more appreciation for her character in the game. Their love is so intense and yet so fragile, it's perfect and it makes me want them to just forget all the bs and live happily ever after.

I will be (im)patiently waiting for the last two books to be translated.
