I thoroughly enjoyed this book about the bittersweet life of L.M. Montgomery. The final pages of the epilogue are particularly poignant:

"Maude suffered from chronic depression, and likely also from bouts of manic depression, yet she produced twenty novels and hundreds of short stories, even in her most difficult and depressive years. "
"Often sad, Maud provided laughter and joy for others."

"Perfect happiness I have never had-never will have," she confided to her journal. "Yet there have been, after all, many wonderful and exquisite hours in my life."

Good book. It reads very fast, but covers Montgomery's life very well.

As a big fan of the Anne of Green Gables series, I have been curious about the life of the author. I had this book on my to-read list for several years and figured it was time to finally read it! I am glad I did. I learned a lot about her life and found it to be really interesting and sometimes very sad. I liked hearing about where some of her thoughts in her writing stemmed from too.

It was such an honor to read this lovely and informative biography about the charming and difficult life of Lucy Maud Montgomery. It seems to me that this work is written for people who have read and loved Anne of Green Gables. A self-made woman, Maud lived through grief, heartache, and mental illness in herself and family members. But oh did she have a knack for living life and enjoying ideas and nature and kindred spirits. She was so much like Anne, though Anne had a swept away, healing ending. Highly recommended.

This book gave me all of the feelings!

Before picking up this book, I did not realize to what extent her life was hard. She had one bad hand handed to her after another. Her life was one of profound loss and sorrow. How anyone could triumph over their troubles like she did while still managing to write and produce a prodigious amount of work that she did in her lifetime, while not being crushed under the weight of her worries was beyond me.

Nor did I know that Maud pulled events directly from her life into her work, like she did with [b:Emily of New Moon|3562|Emily of New Moon (Emily, #1)|L.M. Montgomery|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1563899327l/3562._SY75_.jpg|1223124]. Or that she pulled incidents or relationships from her life but changed them to give readers (and maybe herself) the outcome that she'd wished she'd had like she did in [b:Anne of Green Gables|8127|Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables, #1)|L.M. Montgomery|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1390789015l/8127._SY75_.jpg|3464264].

Maud's uncanny ability to get into the mind of a child and describe their thoughts and feelings so exactly may have been one of the reasons she was catapulted to fame so quickly after the production of her first book.

This book explained why her outlook when writing and producing books diverged, depending on what period of her life she was writing. Even if she had known of her alleged mental illness, I'm not sure whether or not that would have helped her, considering all of the burdens she was bearing, mostly on her own. I can't help feeling very very sad for Maud, who was able to find the bright side of things, for the most part. But contentment wasn't quite the same as happiness.

Even though it is a biography meant for younger readers, it didn't hide from Maud's very real struggles with mental illness. I learned so much about one of my favorite authors and the illustrations at the beginning of each chapter were quite lovely.
