Emery and Brodie first come upon each other at a chance crossing at a donut shop late one night, neither realizing how both their lives are about to change and how intertwined they are about to become. Emery is coming back home to escape trouble she is leaving behind after serving in the Army, and Brodie is living in her hometown after having moved there to help her best friend when she was in trouble. Brodie is instantly intrigued by his first glimpse of Emery, so is unprepared when his next assignment as a cleaner for the mafia is to kill Emery. Thus starts a fast paced journey as Brodie struggles with his assignment and what he will do and is forced to act fast when a second contract killer is sent out to finish what he hasn't.

Once you start this, it's hard to put it down, you just want to keep turning pages to figure out what's going to happen next. I had not read either of the previous books in this series, but had no trouble picking this one up and following along. Highly recommend it and plan on reading the first two next!

Thank you to Booksprout for the advanced reader copy. I voluntarily left an honest review.

First book by this author and it was SOLID. Slow start for me I had to push through the first few chapters but TOTALLY worth it in the end.

Gist of my review: This book had me from the absolute get go! I couldn’t put it down! I mean who doesn’t love a good ol’ ‘hitman from the mafia falling for his target’ trope? This book was absolute fire!

Summary:
‘Emery "Cotton" Bishop has things she wants to forget. Secrets that need to stay buried. After a trouble-filled stint in the military, Cotton is returning to her small hometown to heal and move on.

Nothing’s ever that easy, though.

It was a favour for a friend that brought Brodie Gallagher to Jessup Falls, Virginia. It's a murder-for-hire contract that keeps him there.

An enforcer for the Irish mafia, Brodie wasn’t expecting instant sparks upon meeting Cotton. He really wasn’t anticipating the order from his boss telling him to kill her. Why would anyone want to kill this woman with shadows in her eyes?

When a second contract killer is dispatched to do the job Brodie is struggling with, he does the only thing he can think of…

…make Cotton disappear.

In Lies We Trust is the third instalment in the Reclaiming Heaven series and is a standalone. Read Books 1 and 2 for a more enjoyable experience.’

Characters: 4/5
I actually enjoyed this book more than I did the original storyline with Shiloh and Gunner. I think there’s an element of relatability I felt towards Cotton that I didn’t necessarily have with Shiloh. For me, this is due to the confrontational, yet honest, way in which Cotton’s trauma and the mental battle she experienced was written. Nothing annoys me more than unrealistic representation. As the reader, I wanted to go on the recovery and rebuilding journey with Cotton. I found myself really rooting for her on an emotional level, and that wasn’t something I really had expected from this character.

Brodie is all hot and 100% alpha, yet he is so compassionate, patient and caring. I LOVED Brodie with an absolute passion!

Plot and Theme: 5/5
I can’t help it. I’m an absolute sucker for a good forbidden romance plot. Even saying that, the story was hashed out very well and the flow of the story was intense and suspenseful but just the perfect amount.

Writing and Setting: 4/5
Just like the first two books, the writing in this book was great. The dialogue was witty and engaging and I found myself chuckling constantly. I love how Whyte can really set a scene, however there are times where I feel that the pace changes a little too quickly and there either needs to be a bigger build up or a slower decline after the climax of the book.

*E.R. Whyte gave me this book as part of the ARC group alongside some promotional material, however it is by my own free will that I am posting this review and the opinions of this review are all my own.*

I enjoy when the contract killer is in lust with his target, right!!!!

Having met Emery before finding out she's a kill target, Brody is enamored!

What has she done? Thank goodness he has a conscience!

Action-packed goodness abounds for Emery and Brody!

Trigger warnings.

A highly enjoyable romance!

First by this author for me...not my last, for sure!
