The Laundry Files series is one of my favorites, despite the fact that in each book there are usually at least a handful of violent/ cruel/ body horror-type things that I find revolting. But this book was too much -- one of those moments happens on the first page, another is referenced a few times in the first half of the book, and a bit before the halfway mark (when
Eve's visiting her mom in the nursing home, in some flashbacks -- and especially a footnote
) comes something so much worse I couldn't fall asleep until two hours later (when I picked up a Becky Chambers book as a palate cleanser :) ).

So add Dead Lies Dreaming to the echelon of books so messed up they stopped me from sleeping -- right now, that's this one and The Obelisk Gate. And I'm sure RF Kuang's Poppy War trilogy would've been there too if I hadn't seen some things coming and skipped them.

If you can stand some body horror, such honorable company should serve as an endorsement.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go look up how to deal with intrusive thoughts. Or, preferably, delete memories altogether.

Note: I was only able to add content warnings for the first half of the book, so I may have missed some things. Hopefully someone else can help add in more. I would've loved to have had this list before I'd started reading.
