Call of the Night was a manga that I was incredibly excited to read. I grew up loving the vampire trope and having two of my favorite things, manga and vampires, combined into one seemed absolutely wonderful to me! But to my dismay, I ended up disliking this series as a whole. I bought both volumes (a less in-depth review to come on the second volume's review) and was really saddened by my lack of enjoyment.
Call of the Night starts off with our main character's introduction. Ko Yamori is a 14-year-old boy in Junior High who has insomnia. He decides to go out one night in search of the best way to peacefully sleep. Among his brainstorming, he meets a mysterious girl in a black cloak, the vampire, Nazuna Nanakusa. Nazuna promises Ko she can grant him sleep if she meets him back at his place. He agrees and through all that discovers she is a bloodsucker. Ko, who is intrigued with vampires, sticks around Nazuna in order to pursue the vampire path.
Although Call of the Night has a very interesting plot, I found that I didn't hate the actual "content", but more so the way Nazuna acted and the interesting scenes they would "zoom in" on. Nazuna, who does not look very old, but maybe old due to vampire age, is heavily sexualized and a lot of her mannerisms are incredibly sexual as well. They zoom in on her loose shorts, thick thighs, and petite chest throughout both volumes I read. Everything about it made me extremely uncomfortable considering our main character is 14. I have just recently turned 18 and although I know teens explore many different paths at that age, it still makes me incredibly uncomfortable to read. I gave this volume 2.5/5 stars solely for the sexualization of the characters. Not a series I would personally continue.
