This was amazing and so informative. The poems themselves were the best modern poetry I read so far this year! They weren’t basic Instagram poetry and they actually had poetic devices used in them, which I enjoyed. A big surprised was that there was historical photos by some of the poems and those were really cool to see! I’m so impressed by this debut collection.

A powerful journey through the Civil Rights Movement in 1950s-1960s America told through short poems, negative space, historical photos, and evocative verse. Martin includes reference to current events and reflects on the tragedies, events, and people who were ignored by history.

This was a beautiful collection of poems that accurately describe different historical events and different changemakers throughout the Civil Rights Movement. The structure of the poems were often very visually appealing and added an element of emphasis of what the poem itself was conveying.

I was most impressed with Martin's ability to show the slow and dedicated march towards progress, with the exhaustion and heartbreak that comes with such consistancy over time. This is a quick read, oerfect for high schoolers embarking on their first real dive into American History.
