Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy

This was such an interesting book! Set deeper into the climate change crisis, Franny is tracking the last arctic terns on what she believes will be their final migration. She manages to convince a fishing crew to veer off course and follow the birds, despite despising what they do. Interspersed in this journey, we learn about the tragic circumstances that led Franny to this point. And if you love Celtic lore about selkies, then you're in for a real treat! (not a spoiler, you learn this very early on.)

Sheeeeesh this book is bleak, yet weirdly hopeful at times? While I didn’t love the melodramatic main character, I really don’t think you’re supposed to. With a dual-timeline, you get an in-depth view into the events that lead Franny to desperately follow the migration of the arctic tern when all other wild animals on earth have gone extinct . This book is climate-fiction at its finest and brutally portrays the devastating impact humans have on the planet.

I wanted to like this book SO BADLY, but the main character was so insufferably melodramatic that I ended up hating the book. When the protagonist has a melodramatic, self obsessed, and immature episode every 3 pages, it really ruins a fantastic story premise (but where the world building is actually barely executed, so disappointing) and an interesting set of secondary characters (the crew). Ugh! I’m so disappointed.
