this story is a bundle of delightful familiarity all the way through. it’s super fast, so it may feel like each step of their physical and emotional journeys are just being ticked off one after another, but for me the most important emotions came through in the twins’ relationship with each other. i really, really loved this adventure through māori mythology, and the twins’ perspectives had me laughinggggg (and also crying) at times, bc i know them, they’re such real representation of kids here.

I'm so into this story of the Māori underworld. The gods (atua) and other mythical creatures are just as tricky as in any other underworld story, and the challenges and characters are uniquely those of Aotearoa. I want to read more stories like this!
