When I went to my local comic shop the other week, the goal was to pick up some books written by BIPOC authors. While a helpful employee pulled about a dozen different trades & novels, I foolishly added, "Oh, what about some Miles Morales stories?" She grabbed this [b:Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Vol. 1|12471274|Ultimate Comics Spider-Man by Brian Michael Bendis, Volume 1|Brian Michael Bendis|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1553618821l/12471274._SY75_.jpg|17455389] which marked his introduction, without correcting me & pointing out that [a:Brian Michael Bendis|12424|Brian Michael Bendis|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1239763230p2/12424.jpg] is white. (On the plus side, at least the artist, [a:Sara Pichelli|2933192|Sara Pichelli|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/f_50x66-6a03a5c12233c941481992b82eea8d23.png] isn't a white man!)

So, while it feels a little weird championing the story of a Black superhero written by a white guy... it's actually really good. I'm sure Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse probably helped influence my enjoyment of it, but a good character is a good character!

Love Pichelli's artwork throughout these first five issues—the story has a few connections to the film but also veers off with Nick Fury, (I assume) MJ's Spider-Woman, Hawkeye, and no multi-verse. I got a little confused because Miles's best friend/roommate, Ganke, reminded me a lot of Ned from the Tom Holland films (I guess Marvel can use any of their IP in any of their other properties).

The collection also includes a few short pages from Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 (billed as Miles's first appearance), however, I didn't quite follow the stories (or see Miles; someone mentioned Spider-Kid—does that count?). One seemed to feature Peter Parker in The Negative Zone and the other had two women talking about the creation of mutants decades ago. Might have made more sense in their full story & didn't see why they were included but, I am very intrigued to read more about Miles. I really wish my library had these trades because I really don't want to have to buy four more to see what happens.

This is when Miles Morales starts being Spider-man.

I keep having it reconfirmed that I don't really care about Spider-man except for when they do something really different with him - namely, when he's not Peter Parker. Anathema to many, I know, but whatever.

This is a really good balance of family story, teenage life, and superhero dilemma. Plus you get diverse characters. The death of Peter Parker is a great story since he's a beloved character and death is not permanent in 616 universe. I'm wondering if that can be further explored here in Miles's story and not making him easily accepted as the new Spider-Man. I like though how Miles and Ganke contemplates how someone would decide being a superhero just because he has powers. This dilemma was tackled with dramatic depth the future Miles Morales story when he's integrated in 616 universe.
Justin Ponsor's coloring is really beautiful. And Sara Pichelli's contortion of Miles as Spider-Man; i feel like it's unique to him.

A quick and enjoyable read. I like that Miles was not thrilled to have powers and he lived his life without using them for awhile.
