A mystery, I guess, but it's really about people. How do horrible things affect them?

Good use of braiding narratives though. Love when things are interconnected like this.

Also, a number of things/references that I didn't understand totally. British things, mostly political, some cultural. I don't think it greatly affected my understanding of the entire book, though.

Interesting read, but I didn't love it. The characters, while intriguing, weren't loveable to me. And I spent a good deal of time being anxious/depressed over crimes against children.

I love Kate Atkinson, she can do no wrong. This book required some serious concentration to keep up with time jumps and changing POV but I just love the way she writes (and think you’ll either love it or hate it).

TWs will be spoilers so if you’re not particularly bothered then go in expecting it to have serious detective/crime theme but definitely worth checking if you are!!

This is a scathing and spirited whodunit, alternately laugh-out-loud funny and immensely sad. Atkinson has a fantastic character in private eye Jackson Brodie, who holds limitless compassion for the fate of the lost or murdered girls and women who haunt his memory and his day job. The three cases are kept separate for a long time, then brilliantly woven together. Addictive and really, really enjoyable, despite the very real and sometimes unexpected monsters who lurk in the background. I particularly love the fact that the criminals are not the focus of the narrative but rather the ones who loved and mourn and try to keep on living. Kate Atkinson has a real talent for fleshing out larger-than-life characters, flawed and funny and beautiful.

I was mildly disappointed that the attacks aimed at Jackson were completely unrelated to any of the murders.

Admittedly I'm new to the genre, but it definitely felt more like a character novel than a mystery. I'd probably rate it higher if I had been more interested in the characters.
