challenging dark emotional mysterious

4.5

I love Kate Atkinson, she can do no wrong. This book required some serious concentration to keep up with time jumps and changing POV but I just love the way she writes (and think you’ll either love it or hate it).

TWs will be spoilers so if you’re not particularly bothered then go in expecting it to have serious detective/crime theme but definitely worth checking if you are!!

adventurous dark funny mysterious tense

5.0

This is a scathing and spirited whodunit, alternately laugh-out-loud funny and immensely sad. Atkinson has a fantastic character in private eye Jackson Brodie, who holds limitless compassion for the fate of the lost or murdered girls and women who haunt his memory and his day job. The three cases are kept separate for a long time, then brilliantly woven together. Addictive and really, really enjoyable, despite the very real and sometimes unexpected monsters who lurk in the background. I particularly love the fact that the criminals are not the focus of the narrative but rather the ones who loved and mourn and try to keep on living. Kate Atkinson has a real talent for fleshing out larger-than-life characters, flawed and funny and beautiful.

I was mildly disappointed that the attacks aimed at Jackson were completely unrelated to any of the murders.

I did not like many of the characters for most of the book, but towards the end became much more sympathetic to them. The cases were very compelling, and I did want to keep reading to find how everything worked together. Some of it was satisfying, and some of it was disappointing.
