This is a pretty funny book, and maybe a good way to soothe kids' anxious nerves when moving. illustrations and tone of the book at first reminded me of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst. It departs a little bit from that feel during the second half, but still a good book to help kids deal with a bad attitude or anxiety about things not going the way they want.

Moving isn't easy on kids. When a boy moves into a new neighborhood, his mother suggests he just walk down the block and make some new friends. The boy, like most kids, knows it's not that easy. So when he walks down the block, the boy starts calling, "Neville!" Soon other kids start helping him call for Neville, asking him questions about Neville, etc. The twist at the end is that the boy is Neville.

I've seen lots of adults say this is a charming way of handling the "new kid in town" situation, but every kid I've shown the book to has wondered "what's gonna happen when the kids find out he's Neville?" Hmmm........ Good for discussions!

The new kid on the block makes friends in a way he never expected. Great for prediction. Scribbly expressive illustrations are a perfect fit.

Madison and I very much enjoyed screaming NEVILLE along with everyone in the book. She was still screaming it to me days later!

When a boy moves to a new neighborhood with his mom, he worries that he won't find any friends. His mom suggests that he walk down the street and explore. Bored out of his mind, he starts shouting for Neville and before he knows it, other kids from the neighborhood are helping and asking about Neville. This book was unbelievably cute and it can definitely be used as a way to help kids who are moving or who don't believe that they have any friends.

I could relate to this book since we moved and kids had to adjust and make new friends. I also liked the illustrations.

Great story, great illustrations. How fitting that as we celebrate the 50th year of Phantom Toolbooth, we have another great story from Juster. A student weary of being the new guy finds an innovative way to become part of the neighborhood.

I liked the way that as the story started, the illustrations were somewhat bleak and simple, and as Nevile became more involved with others, the pictures changed to "technicolor", almost as the transformation in the "Wizard of Oz". This is a very clever, yet simple idea. (And I wonder how Juster envisions Neville telling the others his real name!)

Interesting that wikipedia doesn't list this book on his profile as yet!

What a clever take on the adjusting to moving story. Love the anonymous looking neighborhood but distinctive looking kids. Read this at storytime and lots of kids will be yelling "Neville!"
