You know when you open up a book and you can immediately tell - this, this is going to be special to me. That was this book. From the symphony of character voices, to the intermingled prose and verse, to the integration of ancient artifacts lending an air of authenticity, every page was a delightful, encapsulating experience. Truly an instant favorite of mine and one I look forward to rereading in all formats.

This is historical fantasy at its finest. Not only did the author immerse herself in the history of the time period she's writing about, but the art and literature, as well. It shows. She beautifully weaves together different Greek storytelling traditions from epic poetry to play dialog to pottery so that readers experience the time period in a beautifully unique way. Granted, I worry this is something that appeals more to those of us with an extensive background in the era more than a middle school student, but it was still darn cool. As far as the story itself, the characters are all amazing and the plot features some great twists, but it does slow down a bit in the final third as it gets bogged down in a sideplot focusing on Sokrates. Still, it was such an awesome experience, I'm willing to overlook a few things.
