Becstar has good art and unique character designs, however, I wasn’t able to be fully engrossed into the story and I felt a lack of world-building in the sci-fi setting. This held me back from really immersing myself into the plot and characters. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to connect with the main character or supporting cast. The quality of the comic is not poor, so I think another reader may really enjoy this.

'Becstar' by Joe Corallo with art by Lorenzo Colangeli is a graphic novel about a band of ex-mercenaries and the way their lives changed one day.

Becstar is lucky, and there is a reason for that. She lives in secret, or so she thinks, until her past catches up with her. It turns out that her luck is caused by a relic she found and one of her old band of treasure hunters wants to reunite it with the others.

I liked this interesting mix of a SF story with the fantasy twist of cursed artifacts. The art has an angular almost manga twist to it. I'm interesting to see where this story goes.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Diamond Book Distributors, Mad Cave Studios, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

"Leaving her old life behind with the help of her magical luck dagger and her fan-turned-regret filled-friend Sally Soolin, Becstar ekes out a living under the nefarious Shadow Syndicate's radar. But when a mysterious girl appears with grim news and an urgent quest where the fate of the universe hangs in the balance, Becstar has no choice but to join... and regret it immediately."

Originally, it was the cover that drew me into reading this graphic novel and honestly, the illustrations did not disappoint. Fantastic art and character designs.

However, this GN did fall short with the world-building leaving me disconnected from the plot. If there had been a bit more development I'm sure this would have been a 4 star + read.

Thanks Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for honest opinions

To start off, I really enjoyed the art and the way it presented the past and present. Everything else about this graphic novel fell flat for me. None of the characters stood out or had interesting distinct qualities. I had a rough time connecting and sympathizing with them. The plot and world-building was quite confusing and could’ve used some more explanation. I couldn’t see where anything was going and was left thinking “what the heck just happened?”

Becstar is star-hopping mercenary-gone-full time-gambler light-years away from Earth. Leaving her old life behind with the help of her magical luck dagger and her friend Sally Soolin, Becstar ekes out a living under the nefarious Shadow Syndicate's radar. But when a mysterious girl appears with grim news and an urgent quest with the universe fate hangs, she has no choice but to join and regret it immediately.

I was excited about this graphic novel. It, sadly, did not meet my excitement level. The plot was confusing, I had to keep flipping between pages to understand what was happening. It felt all over the place, and I feel like the story would have been done better if the plot was better planned out.

The art style, however, was phenomenal. I absolutely love this artist's style of character drawings.

This graphic novel just fell flat because the plot and worldbuilding were too jumbled for my liking, however, that does not mean someone else will like it!

*Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with and advanced copy of this book to read and review.

The synopsis and the cover art of this graphic novel sucked me in and then subsequently proceeded to let me down hard. The art style in this book is not as good as the cover, the characters faces look squished and out of proportion. It was very distracting and off putting while trying to read this book.

I have also never read a book where so much and nothing happens at the same time. it was the same plot loop over and over again. Murder, run from bad guy, murder, run from bad guy, etc., etc. Over and over in an endless loop until we get to what it supposed to be the climatic ending but just ends up being disappointing.

This book also tries to end with a cliffhanger but it was absolutely unnecessary, as there is no where for this story to go. Overall, a big disappointment, and an hour of my life that I will never get back.

The artwork in this one is stunning. It is is the best part of this book. The visuals are fantastic, but are unfortunately the only thing that captured me about this book. I felt like I was dropped into the middle of the second book, but this is somehow the first book. The characters felt like they were developed in previous books and the world building felt the same way. I felt that I was missing large chunks of this story to make this world and the characters make sense. Unfortunately this one didn't work for me and I would have loved to know more about he world and the characters that inhabit it.

I would like to thank Diamond Books for providing me with a copy.

I received this as an eARC to read for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Mad Cave Studios for giving me access.

The art was stunning while the story wasn't up to par. We were thrusted into what felt like the middle of a storyline. I wouldn't have minded finding out more of what happened in the past for Vol. 1 and then this story being Vol. 2 or even 3. The flashbacks wasn't enough and left me confused at times.

Thank to Netgaly I had the chance to read Becstar before it comes out and I like it. The drawing is not the style is like but I think it works really well with the story, the universe is for me a mixes between Star Wars, Voltron, She-Ra, and a little bit of Aurora Rising.
I spend a great time reading it, the story was original, the characters were all different but match very well together and I did not expect that ending and that a good thing. I really love Becstar she thought and at the same time caring for the people it's the perfect combination for a hero.
I really like Becstar to get a second comic, I need to know what happens to some characters and I need to need more about the artifact.
