I really liked it but there were some flaws. The author doesn't really portray a character who has been raped. Anyone who has gone through such an experience would have been unable to function for a long time and it's just not believable in the main character because she takes it too well with little emotional damage. I wish the author had dealt with it realistically. It would have made the main character much more human and the process. And the ending was weak. But I do like the writing and I would recommend it.

I am a sucker for historical fiction. I absolutely love it, so I really enjoyed this book. I didn't know much about Shanghai or what China was like at the beginning of WWII, so I found this really interesting. The characters were so well developed. It was one of those books that I couldn't put down and as I was reading it, I was getting more and more sad knowing I was getting closer to the end. That said, WORST. ENDING. EVER. I felt cheated, I'm not going to lie. Hopefully there is a sequel coming?

I think that’s the last Lisa See novel for me. Her characters are flat.

Books like this make me wish I had a sister! Glad my girls have each other - though hopefully their lives are much less eventful and tragic. The book completely sets up the sequel, which I'm already devouring.

It’s too boring, with all telling no showing. And the way See tells the story feels so detached and emotionless. Plus I read reviews and got spoiled on one thing and also learned the book turns into trauma porn which I have zero desire to read
